For more than fifteen years, podcasting has been my way of connecting with people through storytelling. This time, the storytelling is personal. I chose this format because I need to walk through my own grief journey, and I know that hearing the memories, reflections, and truths shared by those who knew Joel will help me piece together the fuller picture of his extraordinary life. As the host, I’m giving myself permission to dive deep—to ask the questions I never thought I’d need to ask, to fill in the gaps, and to gather the stories that will carry me forward. Joel was never driven by fame, even though he worked alongside people who were household names. One of them was Rob Reiner, with whom he collaborated on When Harry Met Sally. To Joel, Rob wasn’t a celebrity—he was simply a friend, another human being doing meaningful work. That was Joel’s way: grounded, humble, and always focused on the person, not the spotlight. In October 2025, just one month after Joel’s passing, the city of Saratoga Springs and Caffè Lena honored him with a beautiful celebration of life. The tribute included a vibrant 2nd Line parade led by New Orleans musician Glen David Andrews—a joyful, musical farewell that captured Joel’s spirit perfectly. Caffè Lena—“Where the Music Never Dies”—and its School of Music will continue to grow, evolve, and inspire in Joel’s memory. His presence is woven into the fabric of that community, and this series is one more way to keep his light shining. So let’s begin with Story #1. My guest today is Kim Scharnberg—an American composer, arranger, orchestrator, record producer, and conductor. But more importantly, Kim was Joel’s friend. And today, we get to hear his Joel.

I’m honored to announce the launch of our newest podcast, Where the Music Never Dies: Stories of Joel Moss.

This series is a labor of love—created to celebrate the life, creativity, and spirit of my big brother, Joelie. Each episode will feature friends, colleagues, and collaborators sharing personal stories and reflections that capture the essence of who he was and the impact he made.

If you’re seeing this for the first time and have a story to share, I’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to me at newclevelandradio@gmail.com.

We’ll continue these conversations beyond the Celebration of Life, which will be held on October 14th at Caffè Lena. Joel’s music may have paused, but his legacy plays on—in every memory, every laugh, and every note.

Let’s come together in the spirit of love…Karen Kiki
