Don’t Call Me a Widow – Part 61 – Mahjong Day
Don’t Call Me a Widow – Part 61 –

Mahjong Day
I grew up watching my mother play Mahjong, surrounded by circles of women who became her lifelong friends. She wasn’t an extrovert or an introvert — she simply lived in the moment. She stepped out of her comfort zone without hesitation, following her instincts and creating community wherever she went. Only recently have I realized how blessed she truly was. She had the love of her life — my dad — and she also had friends, family, and more friends than she could ever count.
I, on the other hand, have often felt a distance between myself and the people I connect with. I’m fortunate to have friends from elementary school, high school, and throughout my career, but none of them live close enough to be part of my everyday life — at least not until now.
Over the past six months, I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and today is a perfect example of that growth.
Two months ago, I joined a group of women who meet monthly to play Mahjong. I enjoyed it, but I found myself wanting something more — something closer to home, something that could become part of my regular rhythm. I’ll continue with the monthly group, but I felt called to create an additional space in my life.
I’ve spent years organizing events for others, so why not do it for myself? I posted on social media that I’d be hosting a Mahjong Meet-Up today at Panera in Macedonia at 11 a.m.
At first, I expected two or three responses. Now I’ve lost count. I sensed it might grow beyond a small gathering, but seeing it actually happen has left me both overwhelmed and excited.
We may or may not get to play a round or two today. I might spend the time meeting, greeting, and laying the groundwork for what this group could become. But what matters most is that I’m living my life one moment at a time — and today, that moment includes meeting new people and planting the seeds of a Mahjong community.
As I get ready to head out, I feel a spark of joy. Today is a special treat, and I’m grateful to be stepping into it.
Please join me on my journey.
