Arike Ogunbowale
American basketball player
Arike Ogunbowale was named WNBA All Star MVP in 2021 and 2024Arike Ogunbowale. Ogunbowale in 2019. No. 24 – Dallas Wings. Position, Point guard. League, WNBA.

I will not give up on the Dallas Wings (WNBA) they are experiencing a losing season as of today.  They have experienced numerous challenges this year with injuries carried over from last season and some new ones this year.   Arike Ogunbowale has been doing her best to carry the team and she can be the star, but she cannot do it all, despite all her efforts which fans are grateful for.  However, Satou Sabaly has been the key figure in this team, and she has been out on the injury list (although she is recovering well) and she will not return until after the Summer Olympics.

The Wings have talent on the floor, and they are working it, and for that I commend them. They have a busy schedule and are on the road a lot. I do not know enough about the game, or the strategies being employed by the coaching staff and the players, but I believe they are strong enough to handle this year and not give up until the last buzzer rings.

VOLT UP!

Returning home for a game on Thursday, June 27th at noon CT

Support the Team – Attend the game

Today, right now as I write this at noon EDT on June 20, 2024, The Dallas Wings are playing The Chicago Sky.  If you have been following my love for The Dallas Wings you may note that my favorite team is struggling with an unusual number of players injured.  Erika Ogunbowale is back in the game today after sitting out in Minnesota due to a shoulder injury.  However, Maddie Siegrist who has been a great shooter this season is out indefinitely with a broken finger.  They are missing Satou Sabally who hopefully will return after the Olympics.

I am proud to be a Dallas Wings fan, their fan base is solid and supportive.  They understand the injuries and how this can affect the team and their season. Jacy Shelton who was an Ohio State pick for the Wings (this year) has had a lot of play time this season as they have needed her to help guard and move the ball.  Jacy is #4, and Teira McCowan #15 are putting their skills to the challenge after the last 8 losses.  Natasha Howard #6 (off the injury list) is on the floor today and she is working it too.  Monique Billings is a fun player to watch, her energy is amazing.  Today for the first time I am observing #22 Morgan Bertsch -all the ladies are playing as a team should.

Last week I had the privilege and honor to be at two Dallas Wings home games.  Sitting among the local fans I heard nothing but positive praise and support for the team.  They understand the struggles and they continue to show up for games and purchase merchandise.  If you want to support this team from a distance, go to their store website – https://www.shopdallaswings.com

I love my Dallas Wings gear…

The Dallas Wings are struggling this year, but their fan base is strong, attending games and rooting them on.  Once again, I had the privilege of attending a second game yesterday.  Let me preface my remarks by stating both games, Thursday evening and Saturday had odd starting times.  Thursday’s game was a 6 pm tip-off and Saturday was at noon.  Both games, although not sellouts, had a full house.

I sat with the fans in two different sections and what I observed was team loyalty.  The majority are wearing ‘Wings’ merchandise from t-shirts and sweatshirts, hats, and more, including myself.

I spoke to the fans around me and learned how passionate they are for this team.  They not only attend games, but they follow the team online and understand that some of the seasoned players for this team are on the injured list and are working their way through recovery to get back on the court.  With each basket scored the crowd cheered and clapped, and although the scoreboard was revealing a huge deficit for The Wings, each of us felt proud of the effort we saw the team make.  The Dallas Wings were in the game to the last sound of the buzzer.

Prior to last year 2023, I was not interested in the game of basketball.  Yes, I cheered on my home team the Cleveland Cavaliers, but I rarely watched a game and I think I have only been to one professional game prior to The Wings.  When my son was in high school, he was the team manager for the basketball team and my husband, and I photographed those games.  My only interest was getting some good pictures.  But last year watching The Dallas Wings was the connection I created with my son.  [My son works for the team as their Merchandise Co-Ordinator. As I would, and still do, watch the game I knew I was connecting with my son 1000 miles away.]

Last year the team was healthy, the injured list did not hamper their playing field and they were in the playoffs.  Although this is a different year, the fans and I understand the losses that are occurring and yet we will not falter!

A little research has provided me with some insights.  The average salary in the WNBA is $77,000/year.  The average salary in the NBA is $9.7 million.  The lowest NBA salary is $1.1 million.  Most WNBA players have a second job and often that is playing overseas in the off season which leaves very little time for their bodies to recover from the small injuries let alone injuries that include surgery and rehab.

As a female I find the salary gap between men and women appalling.  However, as a female I am partly to blame because prior to my introduction to the Wings I too favored male sports.  I grew up in the era where men’s sports were the direction one followed if they chose to become a fan.  It’s ironic because women have been playing basketball and other sports for decades, probably centuries but we are just now in the 21st century acknowledging them.

Salaries in the industry are based on performance.  For example, Caitlyn Clark’s performance in college has provided her with a hefty rookie salary.  Endorsements contribute to the earning power.  Popularity is another identifier for a higher salary, if fans are rooting for a particular player and love the performance the team management will address that in their earnings.  Other factors that can affect salaries include skill level, marketability, draft round, rookie status, and player seniority.

The reason I am pointing out salaries is that we need to understand what it takes to be an athlete in today’s society.  I am not going to debate the fact that the discrepancy between the NBA and the WNBA is outrageous, it is!  I don’t understand why any athlete deserves to make millions while the fans are struggling to buy a ticket to a game.  Loyal fans often are spending their hard-earned money to attend a game, pay the high cost of beverages, as well as purchasing merchandise to advertise their team on and off the course.

Despite the discrepancies between teams, players and fans, I am a fan!  What I have learned in the past year and ½ is that women’s sports are on the rise and they are growing their own fan base.  They deserve the acknowledgement and the opportunities awarded to their male counterparts.

I am not an athlete and never have been one.  In grade school I was always the last one picked to be on a team.  Truthfully as I look back 60+ years ago I never had the passion to learn any sport so therefore I lacked the basic training to be chosen anything but last.  But today I have the passion to watch and appreciate sports and specifically the women who are following their dreams.

Tonight, I attended my first WNBA game.  The Dallas Wings hosted the Seattle Storm and as good hosts, lost the game. (well not on purpose!)   Seriously though the Wings have some injuries and are not playing with a full seasoned team but considering that, they are playing strong!  Satou Sabaly, Natasha Howard, and Jaelyn Brown are out.  Sabaly a dependable player may be out till August 1st and Howard may be back by July 1st. As for Brown, there is not a timetable for her return.  (However, under the guidance of the coaching staff this team is putting their efforts and skill into each game.)

(meet the team https://wings.wnba.com/roster/)

Tonight, it was fun to be at my first WNBA game for my team, The Dallas Wings.  Watching Arika work her magic along with teammates Kalani Brown, Maddy Siegrist, Monic Billings who is a dynamo, Jacy Shelton from Ohio, and the rest of the line-up.  These ladies including Satou are my favorites but as I watch each game my player list grows.

Sitting in the stands with so many local fans (DALLAS, TEXAS) it was amazing to see the support for this team and the WNBA.  My son just asked me what it takes for this sport to gain the attention as the NBA.  My comment is making the league known and available to watch.  Sadly, not all their games are televised and this season I have had to watch many of the games on league pass, despite the cost it is not as enjoyable as a televised game or seeing it in person.  (newclevelandradio.net and What in the World with Paul Seaburn support this team on our podcasts, here on the website and with numerous posts on Facebook.)

https://newclevelandradio.net/the-dallas-wings/

From 1997 – 2003 Cleveland (my home) had a WNBA franchise known as The Cleveland Rockers.  The reason the team folded was lack of attendance.  Now if I have learned one thing about being in business in order for customers or fans to show up at your door is to let them know you are open for business.  Give them a reason to come, and that may mean educating people through advertising and social media.  I will be the first to admit I had no idea back than that we had a team, and I had no idea the WNBA was a thing.  However, in today’s market there are influencers who can drive clients/fans to our door.

Why are we (newclevelandradio.net) supporting and cheering this team on?  Well, it is no secret my son works for the team.  As he has developed and grown in his position over the last year and a half, I have followed both The Panther City Lacrosse Team and The Dallas Wings.  Prior to 2023 I had never seen a Lacrosse game and had no idea how much fun it is to watch with all the action on the field.  I still do not understand the rules, but I am learning.  Now basketball I am familiar with coming from a city where the KING made basketball more of a THING!  Winning the Championship in 2016 was amazing but not as amazing as watching “MY” Dallas Wings.

The women play with ease and finesse and to watch the game despite who the Wings are playing, the players all have their personal style when playing offense or defense.  It has taken me some time to see this but at last night’s game it became obvious to me as their body language is intense (with no malice.)

So, let’s talk about what else makes this experience so GREAT!  Lightening and the Flight Crew.  Lightening is the mascot, and she is a Pegasus and if you don’t know what that is –Pegasus is a winged horse in Greek mythology, usually depicted as a white stallion.  She is a Winged Horse, hence the name The Dallas Wings!

The flight crew is the dance team that energizes the fans who already are energized attending the game.  But when you see these young men and women dancing in the aisle or on the court you want to get up Boogie with them.

Currently they play at Park Center Arena in Arlington, Texas but in 2026 they will be playing in the city that their name bears, in downtown Dallas, Texas.

Last night’s game and time were an oddity as the game began at 6 pm on a Thursday evening with the doors to the arena opening at 5 pm.  Despite it being summertime a 6pm game start is unusual but despite the rarity of it the seats were filled, not sold out, but fans came to cheer them on, and the sound levels proved how much this team is loved.  The final score may have been 84 to 92, an 8-point loss, but the Dallas Wings Fans stayed to the end cheering on each point!

As we all know if you are a fan of the team wearing their gear, sporting their name on your hat, shirt, or shorts if yet another way of supporting them.  I wore my Dallas Wings Tank Top, and I purchased two more shirts one which I plan to wear to tomorrow’s game.  When fans wear their team proudly, they become influencers often without saying a word.  I recommend buying directly from the team so they can profit from the sale rather than a third party.

If you’re in the Arlington, Texas area the Wings will play a day game tomorrow, June 15th and honoring Juneteenth Day!

The arena opens at 11 am for a noon start against Connecticut.  Fans will receive a Rally Towel.

I hope this blog will serve as an influencer and you too will become a fan of the WNBA and my favorite team, The Dallas Wings.

In sports you play to win and the Wings played to win but The Chicago Sky played to win as well and they took this game.  However true FANS support their team win or lose.

"Ogunbowale made six threes and was 11-of-11 from the free-throw line – one make
shy of the Wings record for free-throws made without a miss. The 35-point total
is the most she has scored since going for 41 on June 17, 2023, against the Seattle Storm.
With two steals, Ogunbowale moved into a tie for fourth with Cheryl Ford on the Dallas Wings
all-time steals list at 224."
